Sensor ePTFE Vents Qualification
Verification of protective performance through standardized testing methods
1. Water and Dust Ingress Testing
- IP6X (Dust Tight): Test with talcum powder or fine dust in a vacuum chamber to ensure no particles penetrate the vent or sensor enclosure.
-
IPX5/IPX7/IPX9K (Water Resistance):
- IPX5: Simulate low-pressure water jets (12.5 mm nozzle, 12.5 L/min for 15 minutes).
- IPX7: Submerge the vented assembly in water (1 m depth for 30 minutes).
- IPX9K: High-temperature, high-pressure water jets (80–100°C, 80 MPa).
Method: Place a moisture indicator or conductive sensor inside the enclosure. After testing, inspect for water/dust intrusion or electrical faults.
2. Pressure and Thermal Cycle Testing
- Pressure Equalization Test: Apply a pressure differential (e.g., ±5 kPa) across the vent and measure equalization time (should balance within seconds).
- Thermal Cycling: Subject to repeated temperature cycles (-40°C to 85°C). Check for delamination, cracking, or performance degradation.
3. Chemical and Environmental Resistance
- Chemical Exposure: Immerse in fluids (oil, saltwater, solvents) for 24–48 hours. Evaluate swelling, degradation, or porosity loss.
- UV and Aging Tests: Expose to UV radiation (Xenon arc lamp, 500+ hours). Inspect for brittleness or reduced breathability.
4. Particle Filtration Efficiency
- Filtration Rating Test: Use standardized aerosol (0.3 μm NaCl particles). ePTFE vents typically block ≥99% particles (HEPA-level).
- Flow Rate vs. Filtration: Measure airflow velocity at specified pressure drop to verify breathability-filtration balance.
5. Long-Term Durability
- Endurance Testing: 10,000+ pressure cycles or 1,000+ hours in high humidity. Monitor performance decline.
- Real-World Simulation: Install in prototype sensors and test in target environments (automotive underhood, marine sites).
6. Compliance with Standards
- ISO 20653 (automotive environmental protection)
- IEC 60529 (IP rating specifications)
- ASTM D6701 (chemical resistance of plastics)
- MIL-STD-810G (military environmental testing)
